Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to a mother of white and black parents. She grew up on her mom's side. Her skin color made her feel unwelcome when she was a teenager. Their family was struggling with financial issues. They were always on the move and moved sixteen times to help support their father's work. Russell stated that in spite of all the difficulties, there was always the possibility to reinvent and develop something new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was always in motion. Russell was 18 when she began her first acting class. She borrowed money from her job to buy a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out, she would return home to work, until she made enough money to audition again. This was the way she worked for four years, until she received her first TV part.
